ملخص:
تهدف هذه المراجعة لكتاب “حياة الديمقراطية وموتها” لمؤلفه “جون كين”، للبحث في معنى الديمقراطية ومؤسساتها، ورصد جذورها التاريخية واتجاهاتها المعاصرة، حيث تطرق الكتاب -وهو المحاولة الأولى للكتابة عن حياة الديمقراطية وأيامها منذ أكثر من قرن- لجميع المحطات التي ارتكبت فيها الديمقراطيات أخطاء في مسارها التاريخي، الذي يرى المؤلف بأنه قد شهد مراحل اتسمت بثلاثة نماذج مختلفة للحكم؛ وهي: ديمقراطية التجمع أو المجلسية، وديمقراطية التمثيل، وديمقراطية الرقابة، ويشكك في فرضية أن الديمقراطية معيار عالمي يعبر عن القيم الغربية، إذ يرى أن مستقبل الديمقراطية ليس مرتبطا بالغرب ولا بالديمقراطية التمثيلية، ويحذر من أن ديمقراطية اليوم هي الأكثر هشاشة.

Summary:
This review of the book “The Life and Death of Democracy” by John Keane aims to investigate the meaning of democracy and its institutions, to examine the meaning of democracy and its institutions, and to monitor its historical origins and contemporary trends.
The book touched that the democracies made mistakes in their historical path. The author sees that the historical path was characterized by three different models of governance; they are assembly or council democracy, representative democracy, and oversight democracy. He questions the hypothesis that democracy is a global standard that expresses Western values, as he believes that the future of democracy doesn’t associate with the West or representative democracy, and warns that democracy became more fragile.
